Spring 2023 edition of our AD Bootcamp offered two different continuous training courses for aspiring Assistant Directors. Both courses were organised in February-April 2023, included 10 lectures each and were built to give more insight on a specific job role in the AD’s department.
2nd AD’s COURSE: CALL SHEETS
The aim of the course was for each participant to:
- understand the job description of a 2nd Assistant Director
- understand the working hours legislation needed to create a shooting schedule and call sheets.
- create technical call sheets and understand the process of implementing them
- understand the key roles in the planning and implementation of the processes of other management departments on set
- understand the basics of MMS related duties for 2nd Assistant Director
Course was built for workers wishing to start working or develop their skills on scheduling and call sheets management on fiction productions. Content helped them to grasp what will be required of them in the role and understand the steps towards better communication and collaboration with other departments.
All participants went through creating call sheets for 10 days of feature production, choosing one of two options for a project.

3rd AD’S: EXTRAS MANAGEMENT
The aim of the course was for each participant to:
- understand the job description of a 3rd Assistant Director / 2nd AD Crowd
- understand the elements of breaking down background actors needs from scripts
- create technical break downs and budgets for crowd and understand the process of implementing them
- understand the process of background actors casting
- understand the key roles in the planning and implementation of the processes of other management departments on set
Course gave participants a deeper look into the process of finding, casting and managing background actors for any fiction production. During the course participants created a background actors breakdown and budget for a feature film of their choice and few casting calls on the side.
Depending on each participants previous experience and ability, the program prepared them for their first positions working as an Floor Runner or Set PA, Casting Assistant, 3rd Assistant Director / Crowd 2nd Assistant Director or 2nd Assistant Director.
Both courses were created by BBG Founder Iiris Orasmaa and led by BBG’s AD’s Aino Niemi (call sheets), Paula Haukinen (extras) and Pia Nurmi (extras). Anni Ahti and Olli Kasper served as consultants and student mentors. The visiting speakers included Producer Jonna Enroth, Make Up Designer Saara Räisänen, Costume Designer Sofia Kouvo as well as actors Pelle Heikkilä, Lena Labart and Pekka Salo.
